Hickory Golf

Welcome to the Country Club of Jackson Hickory Golf Association webpage.  Here you will find information on CCJ hickory golfing events, interesting stories and antidotes on the history of golf in the hickory era, and information on hickory clubs, including how to obtain them.  This year’s first event, the 2011 Hickory Masters drew a field of 24 CCJ hickory golfers, our largest to date.  Due to the growth of our hickory events the MGA has taken the CCJ HGA under its wing and we hope many more MGA members will decide to join the HGA fun.

The CCJ HGA will sponsor three annual hickory events.   In addition to the aforementioned Hickory -Masters Four-ball held in April, we will compete in the 12 hole Hickory Open each July, and the Hickory Fall Classic each November.  The remaining two events on this year’s schedule will take place on Friday, July 8th and Friday, November 4th.  There are always cocktails and awards following the events.

HGA events are competed under the governing rules of the Society of Hickory Golfers (www.hickorygolfers.com).   Basically, SoHG allows for play with authentic hickory clubs manufactured before 1935 (may be refitted with new hickory shafts) or replicas of such clubs sanctioned by the SoHG.  At this time the SoHG sanctions replica hickory clubs manufactured by Mike Just at Louisville Golf (www.louisvillegolf.com) and Tad Moore Golf (www.tommorrisgolfclubs.com).  Mike offers a discounted starter set of five clubs, while Tad offers CCJ HGA members a 20% discount on all hickory clubs.

While you may have noticed many participants wearing period clothes in previous events, this is not a requirement for participation (although it is highly encouraged as part of the fun).  We only ask that no modern baseball style golf hats be worn for the hickory tourneys.  There are many sources for Plus 4 and Plus 2 Knickers including the TBerry Knicker Co. and Golfknickers.com.

CCJ HGA hopes that you will join us in honoring the traditions of our great game by joining the HGA and participating in future HGA events.

Little Known Hickory Facts:  Hickory was not used in Scotland for shafts until the introduction of American hickory in the 1860’s.   Before this either ash or hazel were used for shafts.  Hickory then became the dominant material until the 1930’s and the introduction of steel.  Beech and other fruit tree woods were used for heads and it was not until American club makers introduced persimmon in the 1890’s that Scotland adopted this superior material as well.
